Course Description

5.  Ceramics I is a laboratory class where students will be introduced to the techniques and creative approaches to the use of clay in designing and constructing art forms. Students will experience coil, slab and other hand building approaches. There will be instruction in glazing and firing of stoneware and raku and the applications of clay body and glaze formations.

Emphasis will be placed on the development of skills and expressive qualities of three-dimensional art forms through the use of clay as the primary art material. Some printed materials, videos, text and slides will be used along with discussions.

6.   Student’s goal is to develop the skill, techniques and vocabulary associated with ceramics through basic construction of art forms using clay.

8.  Much of the class will consist of students working when presentations and discussions are not being conducted. Each ceramic assignment is due as assigned by the instructor and they will be 40% of the student’s final grade. Students are encouraged to work on their ceramic pieces during class as much as possible and out of class as well.

9.  Students are required to enter the semester art show and as time approaches, more information will be given. The art show counts as 25% of the student’s final grade in this class. Student’s art show for the spring semester is April 14th thru April 28th, 2008.

10.  The remaining 35% of the student’s grade is based on homework that is turned in and attendance in the class.
