I. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed for students with
majors and minors in biological science. It presents the major concepts
of biology as illustrated by animal life and studies selected vertebrates
as laboratory animals. There are three hours of theory and two hours
of laboratory.
II. REQUIRED TEXT: Hickman, Roberts, Larson, I' Anson, Eisenhour; Integrated Principles of Zoology, 13th Edition, Wm. C. Brown, Dubuque, Iowa. Copyright 2006, Lab- Hopkins and Smith Introduction to Zoology, A Laboratory Manual, 3rd Edition, Morton Publishing, Englewood, California. Copyright 1997
III. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
a. To acquaint the student with
general animal biology.
b. To establish basic ideas of structure
and function.
c. To investigate the finer structure
of the body and their organization into special systems for carrying
on essential life processes.
d. To acquaint the student with
classification and naming.
e. To learn the characteristics
of the major animal phyla.
f. To investigate the relationship
between animals and their environment.
IV. TEACHING FORMAT:
The general format of the class
will be lecture, discussion, and individual investigation in the lab. The
student will be responsible for reading the assigned topics before class
and for participation in class discussion. AV and research papers will
be assigned when appropriate. Students are responsible for all outside
assignments made!
V. EVALUATION TECHNIQUES:
Six major examinations will be given
during the semester. The exams will be objective in nature to include multiple
choice, true/false, and possible matching questions. Each examination will be a sectional test covering
material that has been lectured over since the previous examination. The
final test may be comprehensive. These exams will comprise 600 points while
the lab will constitute 200 points. (The test will make up 3/4 of the grade
and the lab will make up 1/4 of the grade). If a research paper is
assigned it will comprise 25% of the total lab grade and the paper may be
checked by a plagiarism web site.
All assignments
must be turned in on the due date. I will not take assignments late. Assignments not received on time will
have a zero recorded. All students are responsible for making sure your
assignments are turned in on time.
VI. GRADING: Example

| 59 & below | F | below 476 points | Test 5 | 100 |
| Test 6 | 100 | |||
| Lab Ave. Twice | 200 |
VII. ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Attendance is a must to be successful
in this or any other course. Excessive absences ( more than 4 ) may lead to the student
being failed or administratively dropped from the course. Attendance records will be kept and excessive absences will
be reported to the office of student affairs. Attendance should be prompt and on
time. If you come in the class after the teacher you are late and counted absent. This disrupts
class and is rude as well as disrespectful. You may be ask to turn around and
leave. Once you have made it to class on time I would prefer you not to sleep in
class. Again, you may be ask to leave!
There is no such thing as an excused absence.
If you know you are going to be gone, come by or call and talk to me prior to leaving.
VIII. MAKE-UP EXAMINATIONS:
Students are expected to take tests
at the time they are scheduled. A student that cannot make the exam at
the time it is scheduled must contact the instructor prior to
missing the test to be able to make that exam up. Only then, the student will take it on the last scheduled class period
of the semester or any other time set by the instructor. Arrangements can
be made for "special" occasions which are under the discretion of the instructor.
There will not be a curve or bonus on any make-up examination. Lab tests
will not be made up. Lab assignments will not be made up. I will not
take assignments late. I do drop your lowest
lab grade. I do not drop the lowest lecture test
grade. All final decisions will be made in the fairest manner
possible by the instructor.
IX. ASSISTANCE:
Check with the Learning Resource
Center for available tutors and computer assistance. Numerous videos
are available in the library.
X. COUNSELING:
I am not a counselor. If you have personal problems we have counselors here on campus to help. All you should be talking to me about is your grades. Example: What is my grade? Do you have everything I am supposed to turn in?

Academic Integrity: Cheating will not be tolerated!
You are expected to take the examinations entirely on your
own without any outside influences.
Outside influences include, but not limited to, obtaining information of any
kind from fellow students, obtaining information from class notes or the book,
and obtaining preprogrammed information from
pre-programmable calculators or cell phones.
All cell phones must
be put inside your pocket or bag during exams and quizzes. Students with
cell phones out during exams and quizzes will receive a zero on the exam or
quiz!
I will provide important formulas and
a periodic table on exam days. Cases of clear and flagrant
cheating will be referred to the vice-presidents office, and college policy
regarding cheating will be followed fully and in detail.
My concern in this matter is to give the advantage to those students who
have worked diligently to master the material.
Behavior: STUDENTS are expected to act like an adult. Unruly or disruptive behavior will result in your permanent dismissal from class.
NO Tobacco products in any CASC building. This is a NON-Smoking facility. Smoking should be done beyond 25 ft. of any building entrance...NOT IN THE DOORWAY!
Cell Phones and Computers: Turn them off and put them away or don't even bring them. If you are expecting an emergency phone call have them call the switchboard (@ 647-1200) and they will get the message to you. If you are caught texting or using the cell phone in a manner that is disrespectful or disruptive to the class you will be dismissed and subject to Administrative withdraw.
E-mails: If you have questions and need to e-mail me I will answer it as soon as possible. This means after 3:00 pm will be answered the next working day. E-mails after 1:00 on Fridays will be answered on Monday.

DISCLAIMER: You should not capture live animals to dissect at home. If you want to dissect at home you should contact me and I will try to supply you with a preserved specimen.
CAPSTONE: If you are a science major ( Biology, Zoology, Pre-Med, Pre-Vet, Science Education, etc. you must take a pre-capstone test in your first lab of this semester, freshman year. Get with your lab instructor and work it out. This does not apply to Allied Health , Nursing, PTA, or Radiography. You will take the same test in your last semester when you take the Science Capstone course as an exit exam. We hope you have learned something in two years.
