Course Description

This course is designed to give the student hands-on experience with word processing, electronic spreadsheets, PowerPoint, and database management software. Exploration of the Internet and a brief overview of microcomputer concepts will also be included as components of this course. All applications software utilized will be window based. This course can be used to satisfy a computer proficiency requirement at most four-year institutions.

 

Prerequisite

OS1101 or equivalent typing skill. 3 credit hours.

 

Textbook (Textbooks are not optional)

Microsoft Office 2003 Volume 1, Custom Edition for  Carl Albert State College. By: Robert T. Grauer and Maryann Barber.

 

Software (available in classroom computers)

  • Internet Explorer

  • Microsoft Access 2003

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2003

  • Microsoft Word 2003

  • Microsoft Excel 2003

Other Requirements

Students must purchase a USB storage drive (sometimes called jump drives, thumb drives, or flash drives) for storage of classroom project files. 

These devices hold anywhere from 128 megabytes to 4 gigabytes.  Graded assignments will not be accepted via email or floppy disk. They are available from the CASC Bookstore or from most stores that sell computer storage devices. Students will need to purchase a 3-ring binder, file folder, three scantrons, and a #2 pencil.

 

Course Objectives

Upon completion of Microcomputer Applications, the student should be able to:

 Understand computer hardware fundamentals.

  • Become comfortable with computer terminology

  • Describe the differences between applications software and system software.

  • Create word processing documents and understand word processing fundamentals.

  • Use an electronic spreadsheet to solve problems.

  • Author simple data base systems and apply queries to search for a range of data.

  • Understand data communications and graphics functions through in class examples.

  •  Become proficient in the use of mouse and windows environment.

  • Be able to access the World Wide Web feature using Netscape Navigator to navigate, search, and explore the Web. Some exposure to e-mail, newsgroups, multimedia, and other Internet resources.

Instructional Techniques

Class will be taught using lecture, demonstration, and hands-on experience in the form of lab activities and homework assignments.

 

Evaluation and Assignment Submission

Chapter reviews and tests will be a combination of true and false, multipile choice question, and application exercises. Homework assignments and tests will not be accepted via e-mail or floppy disk.  Students must complete and submit all PRINT OUT work during class time on the due date using a USB storage device. 

 

Students who miss exam dates will report to class at a specific date and time set aside by the instructor for make-up exams. It is advised students take the test on the scheduled day.

 

Late Work

Students must hand in work by deadlines in order to receive credit. Late work will not receive credit.  In case of serious illness or other emergencies, the student should notify the instructor prior to assignment deadlines to make special arrangements.

 

Academic Integrity

The CASC Student Handbook details a code of conduct for CASC students. Acts of dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism, etc.) or disruptive behavior directed toward the instructor or classmates will result in immediate academic withdrawal from the course.

 

Attendance/Administrative Withdrawal

Regular attendance is vital to success in any college course.  A student who misses more than six (6) class periods will have a deduction of one letter grade for the course.

 

Assignments

Homework units must be in chronological order as completed. The  assignment must contain the following information: Name of unit, section, file name, page number, due date, and be stapled together. No Late Homework will be accepted or class assignments not labeled correctly.

Administrative Withdrawal

It is the responsibility of the student to attend class and submit assignments as specified in the course syllabus.  Students who fail to comply with the course requirements may be administratively dropped from the course by the instructor.

 

Students in this course may be withdrawn from the course by the instructor should either of the following situations apply:

  • The student misses 6 class meeting

  • The student fails to submit assignments for two (2) consecutive weeks

Cellular Phones/Paging Devices

Students must be considerate of others during class time. Constant interruptions from cell phone or paging devices will not be tolerated.  The items MUST be TURNED OFF in the computer lab.

 

Grades

Grades will be figured from a total point system. Please not that grades will be lowered if students miss more than six (6) class periods. Tests, homework and daily assignments will be assigned a number of points and a totaled. Individuals will be graded according to percentages of their points to total points.

E-MAIL

Students MUST have a functioning e-mail address using Carl Albert's e-mail address.  You will use your first and middle initial plus last name. Your name will be typed in lowercase letters.  The password is your PIN number. Do not give you password to anyone for security reasons.  It is the student's responsibility to make sure you have this information and it is a working account.  Each student need his/her own book (cannot share a book). You need to bring your book and jump drive to class.
