What do I need to do before I transfer?

• Choose a major.
• Research colleges that offer your major.
• Determine what the college of your choice requires for admission.
• Apply for admission.
• Apply for housing if you plan to live on campus.
• Apply for scholarships.
• Apply for financial aid.
• Send an official copy of your transcript.
• Visit the campus and talk to someone who can give you information about your department.
• Talk to any CASC faculty or staff member who is an alumnus of your college.
• If there is a transfer student enrollment day, be sure to call the school and make arrangements to attend.

Private scholarships ranging from small honorariums to thousands of dollars are offered each year to college students by a variety of corporate, professional, trade, government, civic, religious, social, and fraternal organizations.  Applying for scholarships is time consuming, so start as early as possible.  Breaks from school are good times to spend on your search.

Other good places to start looking for scholarships include the reference section of the library, the Career Center and bookstores.  You can save time by addressing envelopes while at the library (because many scholarship reference books cannot be checked out) and by creating a standard form letter that includes your name, address and telephone number on it.

For-Profit Scholarship Search Services

Several for-profit companies throughout the United States offer computerized search services, often charging fees ranging from $75 to $175 or higher.  Carl Albert State College's Career Center does not recommend these services and suggests you thoroughly investigate them before submitting any fees to them.  We also suggest that you read the Scholarship Scam Alert.
