History of the Department of Nursing

In November of 1980, Carl Albert Junior college received approval to establish an Associate Degree Nursing Program. from the Oklahoma Regents for  Higher Education. The college  submitted the appropriate papers to the Oklahoma Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education (OBNRNE) in February, 1981,  Through the work of Donald Drain, the college received a Federal Grant to fund the start-up activities and Linda Kramer, RN  was hired as the first director of the program. Jan Edelstein was employed on June 1, 1981 as the first nursing instructor. Curriculum content and program objectives and philosophy were developed and the program received initial approval from the OBNRNE on July 31, 1981. 

The first class of 24 students was admitted in August, 1981.

During the initial year of operation, Fay L Bower, R.N., D.Sc., F.A.A.N. acted as consultant to the expanding faculty as major curriculum concepts and program sequencing was finalized. Mary Hardy, Associate Dean Emeritus, El Centro College; Mary Holland, R.N.,B.S.N. and Mildred Human, R.N.,M.S. also assisted with specific clinical content integration. 

In 1984 the program received  accreditation from the National league for Nursing which it has maintained to the present.
