Carl Albert State College Represented at Reach Higher Conference
Three representatives from Carl Albert State College recently served on a panel of experts at a Reach Higher Conference in Oklahoma City.
CASC Vice President for Academic Affairs Jason Morrison, CASC Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management Jay Falkner, and CASC Enrollment and Retention Specialist/Reach Higher Coordinator Jennifer Humphreys represented Carl Albert State College.
Dr. Morrison shared, “We were asked to cover several topics, including but not limited to what works on our campus and how we serve adult learners’ needs. We discussed barriers to success among adult students and how we assist the adult learner. Also covered was how to approach working with an adult learner as compared with a traditional student.”
Regarding Reach Higher, panel members discussed the benefits of the program in creating a sense of belonging in higher education for the non-tradition students. Morrison continued, “At Carl Albert, we utilize the Reach Higher program to help students find the degree that is best suited for them. Reach Higher is all about adult learners reaching goals and having success. There are many students who started college and earned some hours, but for whatever reason had to stop out. Reach Higher is set up to encourage those students to return to school and complete a degree. At Carl Albert State College we have a variety of degrees that are a great fit for adult learners, especially those wanting an associate’s degree that can lead straight to employment. For example, our Health Information Technology degree is one that is available completely online. Upon graduation, this degree may even allow a work-from-home opportunity depending on the situation with an employer.”
Humphreys explained, “We also spoke about the partnerships we have developed within the community and with other institutions that help strengthen our student offerings and services to adult learners. The Reach Higher program has provided CASC the opportunity to think about the adult learner and what we need to help them be successful. In turn, we have added more services to help students beyond the classroom. We are building connections with businesses so we can have first- hand knowledge of job openings and what employers are looking for in graduates.” She continued, “Also, Jessica Lloyd in our Enrollment Center helps with students’ resumes, job searches, and transferring to other institutions. We want to help the student beyond CASC!”
