Choctaw Nation College Freshman
Year Initiative Program (FYI) at Carl Albert State College
Camp Chahta Freshman Orientation
Camp Chahta was presented August 9 – 12, 2017, on the Carl Albert State College Campus by the Choctaw Nation College Freshman Year Initiative (FYI) Program.
According to Katie Herr, Choctaw Nation College FYI Success Coach at CASC, twenty-six students and two student ambassadors participated in Camp Chahta freshman orientation for college credit and to learn about Choctaw culture. The students were able to move in to the dorms early, meet with their instructors before school began, and participate in many activities including a Choctaw language lesson and stickball. Herr stated she would like to thank everyone at CASC and the Choctaw Nation who contributed to making Camp Chahta a big success.
Herr continued, “Students who were unable to participate in Camp Chahta are still eligible for the College FYI program, along with the Camp Chahta participants.” She continued, “We welcome Choctaw freshmen to come by my office at HT500A on the CASC Poteau campus to enroll in the College FYI program that will continue throughout the year. Active membership and participation will be rewarded with weekly gas vouchers to assist with college transportation costs.”
In closing Herr stated, “We invite you to enjoy food, fellowship, and Choctaw culture as you receive personalized assistance and join in group activities. College FYI is offered to all Choctaw students with CDIB and Tribal membership cards who currently have freshman status and are enrolled full time at CASC.
