Regent Belva Brooks Barber was appointed to the Carl Albert State College Board of Regents in the spring of 2014. The appointment made by Governor Mary Fallin has Belva Barber taking over the open position of her father-in-law, Bill J. Barber, who passed away after serving as a CASC Regent since 1994. Belva Barber is an attorney from Poteau. She majored in finance and earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration at Oklahoma State University. While working in banking, she attended night school at Tulsa College of Law and received her Juris Doctor of Law. She worked as an attorney in Tulsa and Sallisaw before opening the law practice of Barber and Barber in Poteau with her husband Russell. Barber became a CASC Development Foundation Trustee in 1992 and served as Chair of the Foundation from 2007-2014. Since the creation of the Gold Dust Gala in 1998, she has been Co-Chair and is the driving force behind its success. In 2005 Barber was inducted into the Carl Albert State College Hall of Fame for her commitment to education and Carl Albert State College. She is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association and the LeFlore County Bar Association, for which she served as president. Barber is a member of the Community Freewill Baptist Church, a past president of Kiwanis and past member of the board of the Poteau Chamber of Commerce. In 2013 she was named Woman of the Year by the Poteau Chamber.
