Upward Bound Summer Academic Program at Carl Albert State College – Sallisaw
Upward Bound (UB) participants at Carl Albert State College – Sallisaw recently completed the six week academic summer program.
According to Jaime Henson, UB Coordinator, students who participated took classes to better prepare them for their upcoming year in high school. Courses in math, science, English, reading, college/career counseling, Spanish, health/wellness, music/humanities and ACT preparation were offered. In addition to classes, the students took a variety of field trips to tour universities in Oklahoma including Northeastern State University – Tahlequah, Oklahoma State University – Stillwater, University of Central Oklahoma – Edmond, and UCO Forensic Science Institute. Students also traveled to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, participated in a one day leadership camp at Dwight Mission, traveled to the Tulsa Zoo, and went to Branson, Missouri.

Upward Bound is fully funded through the U.S. Department of Education at $248,771 per year to serve 63 students. The Upward Bound program at Sallisaw has been funded at Carl Albert State College since 2003.
